Ensuring the Safey of Our Young People
By Dubuque Area Substance Abuse Coalition
The Dubuque Area Substance Abuse Coalition would like to remind parents and caregivers to ensure the safety of our young people and our community by taking a zero tolerance stance towards underage drinking and those who illegally provide alcohol to minors. Speak to teens about safe driving and the consequences of underage drinking before providing permission for school and after-school activities.
Be on high alert when it comes to the dangers of underage drinking. It is a factor in nearly half of all teen automobiles crashes and contributes to youth suicides, homicides, fatal injuries, and sexual assaults. To prevent underage drinking, we must curtail the availability of alcohol, consistently enforce existing laws and regulations, and change misconceptions and behaviors through education. Although it’s a tough job to raise healthy, drug-free responsible youths today, parents can help. Here are some tips:
• Educate young people about the laws on underage drinking.
• Encourage them to wait until age 21 before they drink.
• Set a good example with use of alcohol.
• Make it clear that your child’s use of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs is unacceptable.
• Never provide alcohol to anyone under 21.
• Never drink and drive.
• Eliminate or minimize alcohol products at home.
• Let youth plan a party at your home and show them how to have fun without alcohol.
• Call parents to get details on a party your child plans to attend.
• Network with other parents.
Be aware of the problem of underage drinking and get started on the solution. Our communities can’t afford to continue allowing the tragic consequences of underage drinking. For more information, contact the Dubuque Area Substance Abuse Coalition at 582-5655.
