What exactly is Parents As Teachers?

Parents As Teachers (PAT) is an international parent education and home visiting program that begins prenatally - at the onset of learning - and extends to kindergarten entry. Acknowledging that parents are their children's first and most influential teachers, PAT's primary goal is to help all families lay a strong foundation for their child's optimal development.

Does the program utilize a curriculum?

Yes, Parents As Teachers National Center, Inc. (PATNC) combines in-depth knowledge of early childhood development with recent neuroscience research findings in its Born to Learn (BTL) Curricula and training.

How many families does the program serve?

Capacity is approximately 160 families. Many of the families have more then one child; therefore, PAT serves around 300 children.

When did Parents As Teachers start in Dubuque County?

The program started serving families in July 1999.

Where does the program receive its funding?

Initially, funds came from Dubuque County Decatogorization and Empowerment. Presently, it is funded by Dubuque County Empowerment.

Is the program open to anyone?

PAT is a free, voluntary program open to any family expecting a child or who has a child between the age of 0 to kindergarten entry as long as they reside in Dubuque County.

Does the program have outcomes?

Yes, the following areas are tracked: well-child screenings, up-to-date immunizations, lead screening, medical provider, dental, developmental screening, community resource linkages, women have access to prenatal care, and measuring programs effectiveness as it relates to child abuse reports.

I do not have children pre-natal to kindergarten age and still would like to be a part of Parents As Teachers, can I?

Yes, we accept monetary donations to be put towards whatever you wish it to be, and we welcome volunteers to help with whatever your interests and love may be. Call (563) 557-3100, ext. 206, and ask for Amy to discuss the wonderful possibilities waiting for you.
